A Potted History

The Denshaw Whit Friday Band Contest started in 1993. Whilst most Saddleworth villages have hosted contests on Whit Friday for many years Denshaw was a late arrival to the scene.

Three villagers where enjoying a drink or two late one night when the topic of Whit Friday was raised. 4 months later Denshaw played host to 25 bands with the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery band being the first band to play (and win the first prize).

Since those humble beginnings the Denshaw contest has grown year on year to become one of the most enjoyable events in the Denshaw calendar.
